So you've said goodbye to the last guest after throwing a wonderful backyard barbecue. Now you may be debating whether you just want to relax or whether you should head back to the grill to clean it down. The best choice is the latter. It is important to clean your grills after each use. Outdoor kitchen islands and grills do not get as much of the care and attention as they need, unlike indoor cooking appliances.
Your outdoor grills need to be cleaned right away just like your indoor kitchens. Waiting to clean your grill will just make clean up harder and more time consuming than it would have been. When you wait the gunk from your food has a chance to harden onto your grates which you do not want. It is best to clean your grill when it has cooled down some but is still warm. This is when the gunk will come off easiest.
Steel wool or wire brushes are the best tools to use when cleaning your grills. If you happen to have cast iron grates then you need to use a little olive oil when cleaning them. This will help prevent them from rusting. Most other grates should be cleaned with good old soap and water.
If your BBQ Island has a clean setting then turn it on for a few minutes only after you have wiped your grates down with a brush. This will get any left over remnants inside the grill to burn off. Be sure to let it cool when you turn off the clean setting. Then go back and lift the grates so that you can clean the burners. Cleaning a charcoal grill is even simpler. All you have to do is clean the ash catcher after brushing the grates down. If you let the ash build up your next barbecue may taste a bit strange.
Periodically you must give your grill a deep cleaning. This means that you must take out the parts of your grill and clean them one by one. If you have a gas grill be sure to disconnect it first. If the burners are severely clogged you may need to replace them. Also, you should oil your grates before applying any food to them. This will help keep your food from sticking and will there for cut down on the amount of gunk left on your grates.
