When the summer months roll around people really start to think about grilling outdoors with their friends and family members. A crucial part to having a cookout to remember is a good barbecue grill that produces great tasting food. When looking at grills there are a few things to ponder, with the most immediate question being 'charcoal or gas?'. There are some positives and negatives to each type so it helps to familiarize yourself with each before you buy one.

Charcoal Grills Offer Some Benefits

When it comes to using a charcoal grill the biggest reasoning people give is the flavor of the grilled food. Charcoal tends to produce a smokier taste that is very tough to reproduce on a gas grill. This reason alone keeps them as a hot selling item among enthusiasts of barbecue grills. Ultimately you want the flavor of your meal to be just how you like it.

The cost is another benefit of getting a charcoal grill as you will spend less money on one than a similarly equipped gas or propane model. These grills are also lighter in weight so if you find yourself going on camping trips and want to take your grill with you, you should consider charcoal. There are, however, a couple of things that are less desirable about this style.

Setup takes more time as you need to arrange some coals and then light them. If it is rainy you might have a hard time but most people don't cook out in the rain anyways. When you are done you will have some cleanup to do as well. Once the coals are cool you can clean them out and dispose of them. Overall there is more involved to grilling on a charcoal barbecue grill than a similarly equipped gas model.

Gas Grills Are Also Popular Choices

The reason gas grills are so popular with people today is the ease of use. To get started you just have to turn the gas source on and press the ignition button. Once it is lit you can easily regulate the temperature of each burner by turning the knob. This simplicity means that in just mere minutes you can be grilling your steak to perfection.

When you have finished cooking on a propane grill you will then have very little cleanup (if any) to do. Most people will clean the grate by scraping or burning the excess food particles off. This will get the grilling surface ready for the next time you need it. As soon as the grill has cooled enough you can simply put it back into storage until it's time to cook out again.

The one negative feature that most people cite about a gas grill is the lack of smoky flavor on the meat, as compared to charcoal grills. There are ways to smoke your meal using a gas grill but this is more involved. The cost is also higher but this is to be expected as you are getting more capabilities for your money.

The final choice will most likely be one of flavor vs convenience. Do you want a grill that is easy to just fire up (gas) or do you like that traditional smoky flavor on your food (charcoal)? Once you figure out the right style you can compare the grills that fit your budget. There are many excellent choices that will have you cooking out for your friends or family in no time.
